Saliva offers a cheap and non-invasive sample type to enable mass diagnostic testing. Rapid advances in biomarker research have helped scientists around the world build accurate tests based on Saliva as a sample type for their assay. This ability to build sensitive and specific tests, makes Saliva is very promising alternative to blood, nasopharyngeal and other more invasive sample types.
An appropriately designed saliva test can be highly accurate. The FDA has recently issued emergency use authorization for saliva-based tests for clinical use based on a high level of accuracy that’s comparable to nasal swab based COVID-19 testing.
Cambrian Bioworks was approached by a market leading Contract Research Organisation (CRO) to help build a solution to enable companywide-saliva based COVID-19 testing.
The test was to be used to run SARS-CoV-2 tests at the workplace without using the painful Nasal Swab sampling process. The company was concerned that their current sample collection methods were not performing as well as they had hoped and Cambrian was tasked with carrying out a pilot scheme by coming up with a user-friendly and saliva sample collection tube in less than 30 days.
Using advanced manufacturing techniques like 3D Printing and rapid manufacturing, Cambrian delivered over 500 units of Saliva sample collection tubes in under 25 days. These products were further used in validating the sample collection process and overall performance validation of the test assay.
On successful validation of the products, Cambrian Saliva Collection tube was productionised in under 60 days.
With an easy-to-hold grip and a snug fit collection tube, the kit enables a user to spit directly into the collection tube without any sample spill avoiding the worry of contamination during the test procedure.
Cambrian is currently mass manufacturing Saliva collection tubes in Bangalore and is partnering with various test manufacturers to enable saliva based testing at workplaces and recreation centers.
